Passionate in his service to God, the revivalist firebrand Reverend Kayode Olufemi Bajomo is most often known for delivering motivational and uplifting sermons- fists clenched and stressing his dimpled face with each hard hitting impartations- at the New Covenant Church situated in Iju Center of Lagos. And as many are being influenced by his teachings of redemption and revival, Reverend Bajomo continues to devise creative ways of simplifying the gospel to even the most complex mind, notably the Pathfinder and Heartitudes interactive digital series.

Reverend Bajomo has faced mountaintop and valley experiences in over 3 decades since joining the Lord’s army, especially in his 19 years as resident Pastor of New Covenant ChurchIju Center, which sits right beside Satguru Maharaji village and opposite Petrocam Plaza in Lagos.

But there’s much more than meets the eye to this university hall Pastor turned Western zone prayer secretary turned resident Pastor turned Capstoneville private school proprietor (co-run with Blissful Home-maker of over 2 decades Margaret Oluyemisi) and currently New Covenant Church administrator.
In this interview, Reverend Kayode Olufemi Bajomo vividly describes his interesting journey of faith with God and what to expect from God’s own people.

Who is Reverend Kayode Olufemi Bajomo and what does he stand for?

Someone passionate about serving God and being used of God to be a blessing to everyone generally. It gives me great joy to see people attaining their places of success in life and more importantly, being who God wants them to be. I love to relate, make and keep friends, be the best I can be for God and for as many as possible. I choose to live my life as simple as it can be.

Beginning a journey of faith with God

I loved moving with the shakers before God decided to shake me. I gave my life to Christ in 1990 as a church going undergraduate preparing for university matriculation exams when a friend invited me to a Deeper Life program. The program featured a drama about the Great White Throne, the last day that God will judge every man, which was an eye opener for me because one day I will stand before God. “If I get to meet God now, what’s gonna happen

University adventures.

I got into the university and was on fire for God, though it wasn’t easy because my parents didn’t like it as I was excusing myself from the orthodox church. I finally chose to be a follower of Christ rather than be just a regular church goer. Because to be good you must have God otherwise you’re simply being self righteous.

Then in the university, I mixed with a lot of vibrant people who had met Christ, learnt about him and ready to live for God. I was so thirsty and yearning to know about the Lord and that geared on my journey with him until one particular day I asked “Lord, where exactly do you want me to function in the scheme of things in your church“. He took me to 1st and 2nd Timothy, which are actually Pastoral epistles and there I discovered my call to be a Pastor.

First I became an hall rep at Independent hall, whose duties include overseeing the spiritual and physical welfare of all brethren in the hall. Also calling for meetings and encouraging others about the need for God in their lives. It was not easy to convince medical students and other brainiacs (whose excuses were usually academics) about the urgency for God in their lives.

Soon I became hall Pastor, then Prayer team leader and next was President of that Whole fellowship.

Being a fellowship across all geopolitical zones of the country, as I was rounding up my university education, my fellowship placed me to be Western Zone Prayer Secretary across Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, Delta, Edo and more. During my youth service, I was also made evangelism/ prayer coordinator of the Nigerian Christian Corpers Fellowship of my own set. I attended New Covenant Church in University of Ibadan.

After youth service, I resumed my church going ways with several churches, until someone I squatted with became instrumental to my resuming New Covenant Church. From there we were led to Pastor New Covenant Church- Iju Center.

How would you describe your years in ministry?

From the word Go, since 1990, I’ve been into ministry (students and campus), outreach programs traveling different parts of the country for conferences and various programs. Now living as resident Pastor for about 19 years now.
Life through these years of ministry has been an adventure, there’s been mountain top and valley experiences such as moments of God’s awesomeness when we bought the church building within a year and half of takeoff or when some members will leave due to relocation or unwillingness to catch up with desired expectations. God still sends people who will come and make huge differences. Adventures in faith with occasional moments of tears is a continuous learning experience and God is using it to build us into who he wants us to be and it’s something I would do several times over and over again..

What burns your fire and desire in this adventure with God?

I try to envisage the final battle of our Lord Jesus Christ and God against the devil and his own. It will be a joyful thing to be in the army of God facing the host of evil to give them the final knockout. Satan has a way of messing up people’s lives by blindfolding them to the truth. Imagine someone living through life in blindfolds and suddenly being woken by someone else, you’ll be mad at your blindfolder because that person doesnt want you to live that fulfilled life. The best place to be is at the place of service and serving God’s purpose.

Bible tells us David served his generation according to the will of God so I want to serve God’s purpose in my own generation. Let it be said that in my own time, I was one of those used by God to make that huge difference. Its interesting to be on an adventure with God.

What do you perceive to be the biggest misconception about church?

What I perceive to be the biggest misconception is to see church as a business center or a place where there are perfect people. We simply have imperfect people who are being perfected through the grace of God. It will be wrong to think someone in church cannot make mistakes, the effective difference is that we have God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit working in us to enable us take our stand when and where necessary. People err and the Bible makes provision that we have an advocate in Christ. “Let him that thinks he stands take heed, lest he fall“. Church is just filled with people who have taken a decision to journey in the direction of perfection.

What does New Covenant Church stand for?

Discipleship, Team based ministry approach- Biblical truth and approach to ministry

Here’s how New Covenant Church is about discipleship, Jesus Christ says that we should go into the whole world and make disciples of nations. Basically, at New Covenant Church, the core of our message is discipleship, winning souls and making disciples of men, becoming followers of Christ. And we also stand for build ministries and have a team based approach to raising men to go into ministry.

What is your expectation from the Heartitude series?

My expectations is for people to have a biblical approach to the day to day events of life that they are confronted with. Being able to respond to life challenges and demands life places on them in a biblical approach with the right heart. In other words make them have the right attitude from the heart. Simply Heartitudes.

What’s so special about the Family Enrichment program happening this Sunday at your Center?

Family Enrichment Day is going to be an interactive affair. There will be a topic centered around a particular family in the Bible, we learn one or two things from them and then make contributions or ask questions among ourselves. We normally host it like a talk show where panelists will dissect a topic at the podium in the presence of an achor, anybody can ask questions, be it children, youth, teen, Occasionally we host guest ministers to discuss a topic, unlike preaching where you cannot ask questions but this episode allows questions and contributions. We’ve discussed a lot of issues in the bible like habits, finance and so many things. It’s usually last Sunday of the month so we invite you to invite every family for enrichment
